The Journey has Come to an End
Our beloved son, brother and best friend left us this night.
A brave journey has come to an end. A journey that lasted exactly for 25 years, 4 months and 15 days. A journey of a huge heart in a weak and small body. A journey of a brilliant mind in a far to weak shell.
As Mats shared with us all in this blog he was born with some challenges very few could imagine. He was however never bitter, angry or expressed any sort of unfairness. Quite the contrary Mats was the one filling us and his sourandings with sunshine, positive thoughts and optimism. During his more than 25 years amongst us he never had one negative or bad thing to express about another human being or living creature.
For those of us who was fortunate enough to learn to know Mats we share a commen experience - we got to spend time with a great little man. Mats enriched us in teaching us to be able to differ between the important and the not so important things in life. Mats was the true advocate of smiling to the world in order to get a smile back and Mats thought us the power of positive thinking. In Mats we experienced something as rare as a true wise man. They are few, but you recognise them when you meet them. Mats was such a person.
At 23:45 on November 18th the journey of the bravest amongst us came to an end. Now we will start walking the path of sorrow. We have experienced the feeling when parents leave us, but now we will experience something nobody should have to experience - the loss of a child and a brother. This will be a different path to follow. The only conviction we have is that Mats is the one person for whom it is worth going down this rocky path.
Today is a day for sorrow and sadness. But one day soon will also be the day to celebrate a fantastic personality, a strong will to live and a substantial and sustainable influence on his sourandings.
We have loved you so much, we will continue to love you and even if your own journey came to an end this night you will always participate in our joint journey together.
You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

I got to know Mats, or Ibelin as I knew him as through the Warcraft guild Starlight, he knew me as Nomine and for seven years we shared laughs, adventure, ups and downs.
SvarSlettIt matters a lot that, to be somebody who is there for others. He was there for me, for the guild and many more.
The loss of somebody like that, a good and strong person will be keenly felt by all who knew him.
When we gathered in Denmark in 2013, he could not join us in the Flesh, but as always he did not let that stop him from taking part of the fun, this time through video chat:

That was the sort of person he was, not one to let challenges hold him back. He looked for the possibilities in life, not what could hold him back.

SvarSlettI too knew Mats from Starlight. Our characters went on adventures together and explored a world in which so much more was possible than real life would offer him.
SvarSlettWe bantered and bickered, laughed and shouted at each other in character while behind the scenes Mats would make sure people were in fact still feeling alright.
He talked about his illness, never in such a way that people might feel sorry for him. The eternal optimist, he grabbed all that he could from the game that we all enjoyed.
I never got to meet him.
Not for real.
And yet I find myself flabbergasted, shocked and in tears.
Yes, he made a lasting impression on me, ever the social being and enthusiastic adventurer.
I cannot even begin to imagine the gaping hole it must leave for you, his family.
You already know that he was valued and loved.
Know that in this virtual world he stood strong and made a difference to many people; that he made us laugh.
I can only hope we returned the favour.
I knew him as a Starlighter.
Now he has gone into that light.
I hope he'll shine up there.
Because to many of us, he IS a star.

I knew Ibelin, though admittedly, not well. I first got to know him during my brief time in Starlight, then, I ran into him in other games, such as Guild Wars 2. He was a good man, always friendly, with never a bad word about you or anyone else, and a great roleplayer.
SvarSlettThat he fought so long against his disabilities and made so many good friends amongst Starlight is a testament to his good nature, and will serve as his enduring legacy in the years to come, for as long as his memory is kept in the hearts of those who knew him, it will never fade.

I came to read Ibelins blog after I did read about him at one of facebooks ' finnish World of Warcraft" group.
SvarSlettI have no words. His blog and written story about him and his guild Starlight made me cry. I felt sametime happines and sadness.
All I can say as ex World of Warcraft player that it has helped me also go through tough times and some of my guildies became my good friends in real life too.

As a former gamer and role player I was deeply moved by Mats` story. I know the friendships that can form across borders and contries, and the world is better when you have this fellowship, someonw to hold your back. My family did not understand my gaming and was worried for me and what they concidered an unhealthy hobby. Now, years later, luckily they understand more. And as I now am a mother of a child who is mostly housebound due to illness, I support the gaming that takes place in my child`s room. Because I understand.
